Karen Gillan Says Now Is the Time for All-Female Marvel Movie

If the massive success of this year’s Wonder Woman movie has said anything it’s that movie-going audiences will get behind women-driven superhero film and Karen Gillan says that it’s time for the women of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to have their turn.

Gillan, who plays Nebula in the Guardians of the Galaxy films and will next appear in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War, recently told Indiewire that she and the other women of the MCU came up with their own idea for an all-women Marvel movie during the Marvel Studios 10th Anniversary Vanity Fair photoshoot last month.

“I had no idea when we were taking that picture that it would sort of break the internet a little bit,” Gillan said.

The photo features Gillan alongside Thor: Ragnarok’s Tessa Thompson, Guardians co-stars Zoe Saldana and Pom Klementeiff, Captain Marvel’s Brie Larson, Avengers’ Scarlett Johansson, Black Panther’s Danai Gurira, and Ant-Man and the Wasp’s Evangeline Lilly. But while the photo was a bit of an internet sensation, it was what the shoot inspired that Gillan said was most notable.

“Brie Larson was like, ‘We should go up to Kevin Feige and tell him to make an all-female Marvel movie,’ so we marched up there in a group, a whole herd of us, and said that to him,” Gillan said. “He was like, ‘Yeah, that would be amazing!’ but he didn’t really commit to it, but he thought it would be a great idea.”

And the box office success of DC’s Wonder Woman is strong evidence that Gillan and the other Marvel women are right. In addition to making numerous lists as one of the best films of 2017, Wonder Woman brought in over $820 million worldwide at theaters and Gillan cites the Patty Jenkins-directed film as a reason why it’s time for Marvel to get in the game as well.

“Now is the time, more than ever,” Gillan said. “Look at the success of Wonder Woman. It’s clear that we all want that.”
