Are you ready for the Criminal Minds season 13 premiere? We’re right there with you, and it’s only a few weeks away! The show has a number of things to address when it comes come back, beginning with the departure of Damon Gupton. They have to find a logical way in order to write that character off the show (and we’re already very concerned as to how they could do that) alongside finding the right way to continue on the story with a new regular: Daniel Henney! After two years at Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, the actor is bringing his character of Matt Simmons over to this show.
As a result of that, the one thing that we do anticipate is a little bit of camaraderie-building with the team, given that he doesn’t know any of his new team members. Even though he is very much trusted thanks to his work with the International Response Team, that doesn’t mean that the entire crew will be devoid of problems during the transition. He has his own way of doing things, and he will have to balance that with how some of the other team members work.
Unfortunately, some of this may have to be built over time, given that in the Criminal Minds season 13 premiere urgency is going to stand tantamount. Remember the cliffhanger for one, and also remember that Mr. Scratch is still very much out there. The synopsis below doesn’t offer much, but it does reinforce a little more of the urgency that we are talking about here:
“Agent Matt Simmons joins the BAU team in a race to take down Mr. Scratch and save one of their own in the process, on the 13th season premiere of CRIMINAL MINDS, Wednesday, Sept. 27 at a new time (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Daniel Henney joins the cast as Matt Simmons, an ex-Delta soldier and former International Response Team member.”
As for the photo above, this is actually a little bit more important in terms of the story. It is Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness) who is really responsible for bringing Matt Simmons into the fold, and there should be some good scenes for the two of them during the premiere. Beyond that, our main point of curiosity is seeing if she is able to get on board with him as a newbie more so than she did back when Luke Alvez first jumped on board at the start of season 12. For some reason (that they haven’t explained well on the show), Garcia has a problem with Luke and only Luke – no issues when Stephen Walker showed up, and looks like no issues with Matt Simmons either. It’s clearly the idea that Luke is “replacing Morgan and as we all know there’s no one that can replace Morgan for Garcia (or for us!). That being said, besides being attractive, Luke isn’t the same as Morgan and we want to see Garcia drop her attitude towards him. Even Morgan showed up in the finale and told Garcia to stop her nonsense with Luke.
Beyond this episode, details of the new season are scarce, but it’s fair to say that there are going to be some new UnSubs mixed with some familiar threats. With the show at a later timeslot this year in 10:00 p.m. Eastern, we do wonder if this in turn is going to cause the show to get a little bit darker and more sinister than it has in the past – and that’s saying a lot since this is already a pretty dark show with a lot of nasty bad guys.
