Earlier this year, DC Comics fans were surprised when Batman proposed to his long-time lover, Selina Kyle. Readers were left hanging on Catwoman’s response, but the secret it out.
Catwoman said yes.
Over on USA Today, the site revealed how Batman’s proposal went down. The answer came after Batman delved into his darkest secrets with Catwoman, and told her that he tried to stab the Riddler before Joker stopped him. Wayne wanted her to know everything but she was not phased by her boyfriend’s past.
She told Bruce their past sins cannot compare to the love they have now. Selina then tells Batman to propose again, “but this time you poor boy, don’t demand.” And, after he does, she says yes.
Writer, Tom King spoke with USA Today about Selina’s answer, saying that he felt the exchange was true love.
“That to me is what true love is,” King explained. “It’s showing who you truly are to someone. It’s letting someone know deep down who you are and that’s horribly frightening and it scares Batman as much as anything ever has.”
“They’re two broken people, and because they’re broken, they have the edges that fit together.”
The writer went on to discuss what was next for the superhero couple. “In 78 years of this character, he lives in every kind of medium humankind can produce. But we’ve finally taken you someplace you haven’t seen before, so we’re going to explore this,” King explained.
“Some people are going to think, ‘Oh, my gosh, he’s gone insane, we need to fix him.’ And others willgo, ‘He’s gone sane. We finally have a Batman we’ve been looking for,’ ” King explained.
“Most superheroes, you make them happy and you end conflict — you give Spider-Man a wife and where do you go from there? But Batman’s the opposite: You give him happiness and you create conflict, because he’s fundamentally a sad character.”
