What do you get when the criminally insane meets the unconditional love? We don’t know, but it looks like DC might soon show us.
According to reports, Glenn Ficarra and John Requa have been roped in by DC to direct a Joker-Harley Quinn movie. For those who are not aware, the duo led the hit drama This Is Us and also wrote the 2011 romantic Crazy, Stupid, Love.
It has also been confirmed that Jared Leto and Margot Robbie would reprise their respective roles for the upcoming movie. This film, described as a “criminal love story” features the two biggest psychopaths of Gotham city. You can think of it as a regular rom-com, with murders and chaos.
The film, which is supposed to release after the Suicide Squad sequel, is moving along the production at quite a pace. It must be noted that while the current film will follow the same universe as the main DCEU, WB is planning to create a separate universe for making stand-alone films with characters outside the main universe.
According to sources, WB is following this strategy to distinguish itself from its main competitor, Disney. While Disney is banking on making stand-alone movies on the original saga (as in the case of Star Wars), DC wants to explore popular characters without needing to break continuity simultaneously.
However, the primary objective behind this decision might be Warner’s hurry to appease the audience without caring about timelines. A separate universe means a lot more movies at the same time.
The projects heads, Ficarra and Requa, have some excellent credentials to their name. Apart from This Is US (which bagged 9 Emmy nominations) and Crazy, Stupid, Love, the duo also wrote I Love You Phillip Morris and Focus (which starred Margot Robbie). It would be interesting to see these masters of the drama genre dealing with Joker and Quinn.
